Did you know:

1768. Act passed for construction of the Birmingham Canal.
1769. Canal opened between Birmingham and Wednesbury.
1772. Main line from Birmingham to Aldersley (Wolverhampton) completed.
1790. Smethwick summit lowered.
1794. Birmingham Canal Navigations formed.
1824. Thomas Telford was consulted for advice on improvements to main line.
1837. Grand Junction Railway opened.
1838. New Main Line opened.
1846. BCN leased to London & North Western Railway.
1863. Cannock Extension Canal opened.
1917. Lapal Tunnel (Dudley No.2 Canal) closed.
1974. Last regular cargo traffic on BCN ceases.
1975. Gas Street Basin warehouses demolished.

Birmingham Level (Gas Street area) is at 453ft or approx 148.62 metres.
